One commonly used method is the **socket graft**, where bone tissue from a human donor is placed into the extraction site. After a socket graft, a waiting period of about 4 to 6 months is required before placing an implant. The discomfort experienced during recovery is minimal.

Another option is the **lateral ridge preservation graft**, used to build sufficient bone for implant placement. Like socket grafts, these typically use donor bone from human sources.

For large bone defects, the **block bone graft** method is preferred. This involves harvesting a small bone block from the back of the jaw and fixing it into the deficient area. Titanium screws are then placed to secure the graft. Healing takes approximately 4 to 6 months before proceeding with implant treatment.

It’s important not to confuse block grafting with **sinus lifting**. In a sinus lift, the sinus membrane in the upper jaw is elevated to create more vertical space for implants.

Types of bone grafts include:

  • Allografts (from human donors)
  • Xenografts (from animal sources)
  • Alloplasts (synthetic materials)

How Is A Block Bone Graft Performed?

First, the patient undergoes a detailed oral examination and imaging to evaluate jawbone condition and determine the extent of bone loss. Once suitability is confirmed, the dentist creates a personalized treatment plan. Patients should inform their dentist about any existing medical conditions and medications before the procedure.

The operation is usually performed under local anesthesia, though general anesthesia may also be used if needed. Typically, the patient’s own bone is harvested for the graft, improving success rates. After anesthesia takes effect, a small bone block is removed and placed in the target area of the jaw.

Before moving on to implant placement, healing must occur — usually within 6 to 8 months, though this can vary per patient. Once healed, implant treatment can proceed to restore the missing tooth.

The donor bone is most often taken from the posterior lower jaw, though it can also be harvested from the area beneath the front teeth.

Who Can Receive Block Bone Graft Treatment?

To be eligible for implant treatment, there must be sufficient bone to anchor the titanium implant securely. In cases of inadequate bone density, the **block bone graft** technique is used to strengthen the bone structure.

This treatment can be performed safely for patients with insufficient bone for implant surgery. Bone grafting not only restores bone volume but also ensures a healthier and more durable foundation for future implants.

After tooth extraction, bone resorption begins in the empty socket. To prevent this, bone grafting — either with bone powder or block graft — may be applied immediately after extraction, even if implants are not planned right away. This maintains bone volume for future treatment.

Patients with bone loss due to infection, gum disease, or trauma can also benefit from block bone grafting. It is also used to support previously placed implants that have lost bone density over time.

When Is Bone Grafting Necessary?

When a tooth has been extracted and no prosthetic or implant has been placed, bone resorption naturally occurs in the jaw. A block graft may be required to restore this lost bone. Alternatively, bone powder may be used to reinforce bone density.

The goal of bone grafting procedures, including block grafts, is to **increase bone volume**. These can be applied to any area of the jaw — not just the molar region — including the front teeth area if bone loss is detected there.

Why Is Bone Tissue Important?

Bone tissue is crucial for successful implant treatment because it provides the structural foundation for the implant screw. Without adequate bone, the titanium implant cannot fuse properly with the jaw, increasing the risk of implant failure.
